There is a unique relationship between a club-going audience and a Dj, capable of shaping and building the musical experience as it changes, throughout the course of the night, elevating beats, and grooves, and choruses from singular events to, in many cases, an unrelenting tide of movement and passion that can inspire and amaze. I’ve been on that side of it. And I’ve had nights that changed everything.
But that relationship is just as vital and powerful on the other side, between the DJ and the musician, a partnership that has, in time, proven to be almost other-worldly in its construction.
As a musician, I can’t tell you how many times I have walked into a club and felt moved by the music, only to realize that it was my own song, my own beats, that were, rabbit-like, pulled out of just the right hat at just the right time, by a seasoned magician whose hands moved too fast to be seen. I know that other musicians have had that exact same experience. The sense of wonder when you hear your own song played and people STAY on the floor.
And when it is magic, it is an electric conduit between everyone. Every time I’ve met someone who has called out one of my songs as their favorite, it’s been invariably because Jeff Moyer, or Greg Haus, or Scary lady Sarah, DJ SJ, DJ Senseless, DJ :eyg:, Veganinblack or another DJ whose name belongs here played it at the right time, with he right audience, making it make sense, giving it some reason to exist.
I wanted to do this for a while, to partner with a DJ and let them create a mega mix of the band, something they were able to control and build they way they wanted. And it wasn’t hard to land on the DJ I wanted to do it. Bill Saveley and I have been friends since we were about old enough to be in the club and I’ve always had a huge respect for his ability to build a musical experience in a room. He has a love of the club and the people on the floor that translates really well and he’s a good friend.
I hope people will consider this, the first one of the series, to be a celebration of the relationship between the DJ and artists/Club-goers and an understanding of just how important DJs are.
There are more of these coming in the future, with different artists and different DJs, some of them my favorites on both sides. But someone had to be the Guinea pig and kick this off.
My thanks go out to Jim Semonik and Electronic Saviors, for letting us continue the tradition of ES beyond the compilations and projects released so far. It’s such a worthwhile cause and a brilliant association. All the proceeds from this project will go to Electronic Saviors in its efforts to fight Cancer.
To all the great DJs out there that made me think this was a good idea in the first place, thank you. To all the remixers that have participated in some of these tracks, thank you. And to everyone else involved.
Each release from THE BIG FIX will be devoted to a single artist, where one talented but potentially a little warped DJ will
create an hour long set focused on that Artist's work. The Big Fix is honored to partner with Electronic Saviors and pass along all proceeds to the ES fund to fight cancer....more
